Nanataki lives up to its name — "seven falls" — by breaking a 60-meter descent into a chain of seven distinct cascades on the Kosaka branch of the Yoneshiro River, in the Hachimantai district of Kosaka, Akita Prefecture. Where many of the Top 100 demand long approach hikes, Nanataki is a rarity: the falls are easily reached by car, standing just eight kilometers from the Kosaka Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway. That combination — a genuinely staged, seven-step waterfall and near-roadside access — earned it selection to the Ministry of the Environment's list of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls in 1990 and makes it one of the list's most approachable northern entries.
