Geology is on open display at Kitashōji Falls. The 121-meter waterfall, 35 meters wide, pours in three cascades down a granite cliff that forms part of the Itoigawa–Shizuoka Tectonic Line — the great fault dividing eastern and western Japan — on the Ishiutoro River, an upper tributary of the Fuji River in the Minami Alps National Park, in the city of Hokuto, Yamanashi Prefecture. Below the main falls drops a second waterfall, the Kudan Falls, itself 40 meters high and 20 meters wide. The "north" in the name distinguishes it from the Minami-Shōji Falls across the mountain; originally, "Shōji-ga-taki" referred to this fall alone.
