Protection came early to the Atera Seven Falls. This stepped cascade on the Atera River in Shinshiro City, Aichi Prefecture, has been designated both a Place of Scenic Beauty and a Natural Monument since 1934 — a double national designation it has now held for nine decades. The name counts its tiers: seven falls in sequence, descending a combined 62 meters through the river valley. In 1990 the Ministry of the Environment added a third honor, naming it among Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls. Few falls on that list can match the depth of its paper trail; Atera was recognized as nationally significant more than half a century before the Top-100 list existed.
