Akiu Great Falls sends the upper Natori River over a 55-meter ledge in a single six-meter-wide column — a concentrated, forceful drop in the Akiu district of Taihaku-ku, within the city limits of Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. Its credentials are unusually thick for one waterfall: it is a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty, a member of Japan's official Top 100 Waterfalls, and by some accounts is counted among the "Three Great Waterfalls of Japan," though the membership of that informal trio is disputed. In the coldest stretch of winter, around early February, the falls have been known to freeze — the great column stilled into ice.
Visiting Akiu Great Falls
The falls are in the Akiu district of Taihaku-ku, Sendai, on the upper Natori River. In severe winters the waterfall can freeze around early February.
