Fukui Prefecture chose once, and it chose Ryūsō Falls. The 60-meter waterfall in the town of Ikeda, Imadate District, is the prefecture's only entry on Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls, the national list published by the Ministry of the Environment in 1990. It falls on a branch of the Kuzuryū River — the "Nine-Headed Dragon" river that dominates Fukui's geography — and that lineage places the fall within one of the region's defining water systems. Like Marugami Falls in Saitama and Hossawa Falls in Tokyo, Ryūsō carries the particular distinction of being a prefecture's sole representative: the one cascade standing for all of Fukui in the national selection.
