Nikkō's fame rests on more than one waterfall. Kirifuri Falls — the name is written with characters meaning "falling mist" — drops 75 meters on the Kirifuri River, a tributary of the Itamuna River in the Tone River system, at Sono in the city of Nikkō, Tochigi Prefecture. Together with Kegon Falls and Urami Falls it is counted among the three famous waterfalls of Nikkō, a trio that has long given the area a reputation as waterfall country, and it holds its own place on Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls list. Where Kegon draws the crowds of Chūzenji, Kirifuri anchors the quieter Kirifuri highland side of Nikkō's geography.
