Kaname Falls is really a family of waterfalls. The main drop, the 36-meter Odaki ("male fall"), is joined by the 30-meter Medaki ("female fall") and, upstream of the Odaki, a third cascade called Hirataki — a paired-falls arrangement common in Japanese waterfall naming, here completed by a third member. The group lies in Kaname-machi, in the city of Hitoyoshi in southern Kumamoto Prefecture. Official recognition came in layers: Hitoyoshi designated the falls a municipal place of scenic beauty on March 10, 1958, and Kumamoto Prefecture elevated them to prefectural scenic-beauty status on March 22, 2024 — a designation renewed across two eras, 66 years apart.
