Goraiko Falls (御来光の滝) — waterfall in Ehime, Japan

Goraiko Falls

御来光の滝
Top 100 Shikoku Ehime Prefecture ↓ 102 m

Goraikō Falls borrows its name from one of the most freighted words in Japanese mountain culture: goraikō, the sunrise witnessed from a high summit, greeted by climbers as something close to a blessing. The waterfall that bears the word drops 102 metres in Kumakōgen, the highland town of Kamiukena District in central Ehime Prefecture. The documentary record is thin — location, height, and the name are what the sources preserve — but the combination speaks for itself: a hundred-metre fall in Shikoku's high country, named for first light on the peaks, and chosen for Japan's official register of one hundred selected waterfalls.
