Dangyō Falls collects honors the way other falls collect spray. On Dōgo, the largest of the Oki Islands off Shimane Prefecture, the Nagu River — rising on Mount Yokoo — drops 40 metres at a site that appears on Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls, while the spring near the falls was named one of Japan's 100 Famous Waters in 1985. The fall also figures in the "100 Hidden Regions of Japan" and stands as a signature landmark of the Oki Geopark, whose islands' geology is recognized precisely for landscapes like this one. Few waterfalls anywhere in the country carry this density of official recognition, and fewer still do it from an island in the Sea of Japan.
Visiting Dangyo Falls
The falls is on Dōgo Island in the town of Okinoshima, Oki District, Shimane Prefecture — reached, like everything in the Oki Islands, by way of the island itself. The spring water near the falls, honored among Japan's 100 Famous Waters, flows close by the waterfall site.
